Pet Health Care and Pet Insurance
Pet Insurance is simply a way to help you maintain the costs of health care for your cat or dog. By paying a Pet Insurance premium, you insure your pet to receive financial assistance for medical care and attention when they need it – whether for illness, injury or even routine care.
You can take out Pet Insurance for your dog or cat from eight weeks old, and help ensure your favourite furry friend receives the attention and medical treatment they need from any vet licensed to practice in Australia.
What can I claim under a Pet Insurance Policy?
With Pet Insurance, you can apply for cover for your dog or cat for accident and illness provided they are older than eight weeks but younger than nine years.
For a lower premium, you can cover your pet for accidents only, and there’s no upper age limit for applying for this option.
You can even choose to include Routine Care as part of some Pet Insurance policies, to claim for things like vaccinations, health checks, de-sexing and worming treatments. Plus, some Pet Insurance comes with additional care, like Emergency Boarding and Essential Euthanasia, at no extra cost.
Once your pet is insured, your Pet Insurance is guaranteed to be renewed throughout your pet’s life, provided there is no break in cover.
Depending on the pet cover you select, you can claim up to 85% of your eligible vet bills up to a total benefit of $14,000 per year.
Limitations to Pet Cover
Accident and Illness Cover generally comes with a 30 day waiting period for illness, while Accident Only cover has no waiting period for illness. For both types of Pet Insurance, there is a six month waiting period for cruciate ligament injuries, but these may be waived at your insurer’s discretion.
There may also be some exclusions, like pregnancy, elective procedures and pre-existing conditions, but you should check the Product Disclosure Statement prior to taking out Pet Insurance.
The cost of Pet Health Insurance
Pet Health Insurance premiums start from less than $1 a day. This means that for less than $7 a week, you can make sure that your cat or dog receives the care and attention they deserve. The Australian Veterinary Association Study (2010) has shown that pets whose owners have Pet Insurance visit the vet more often, keeping them at their healthiest and best. Doesn’t your pet deserve regular care and attention?
